More Laser Sword Dueling
SPOILERS for AHSOKA
Watching the new Ahsoka and I felt compelled to break down some Laser Sword fights.
I’m running an Everyday Heroes cyberpunk game, so it’s top of mind right now.
I scribbled notes for fights from both episodes out now, but I’m going to go in the order we see them on screen, they get more technical as we go.
Ahsoka and Hera buddy cop movie on Correllia, they found the bad guys, Ahsoka jumps out a window and persues the bad guys on foot, there’s a former Sith Inquisitor named Marrok in a black body suit and face mask. Marrok wields a Sith Inquisitor-style saber with a circular blade guard and other neat tricks. Marrok has an HK droid with him.
Ahsoka draws her double sabers, and double activates them. The Sharpshooter can draw two light weapons as a free action, that’s clearly what’s going on here: some sort of two-weapon dual-wielder hotness. So, there should be no balance issues with the saber wielder equivalent.
Marrok shrugs off his half cape.
The HK unit swings wide on Ahsoka as it moves in behind her, flanking with Marrok.
Ahsoka engages Marrok.
Cut to Hera chasing the bad guy’s starship, and now it’s a Hera / Chopper buddy cop movie.
Ahsoka trips the HK unit, the Marrok tries to trip Ahsoka.
Marrok comes at Ahsoka with a two-handed overhand strike. Ahsoka blocks with her two crossed sabers.
The wild and crazy antics of the Chopper Hera show.
Several times Ahsoka pushes HK and Marrok off of the centerline (face-to-face engagement), and they regroup, kind of the rotating opponent thing from Kung Fu movies. Some of these are probably shoves.
We see a lot of swapping back and forth from one to two-handed from Marrok and the HK unit.
Ahsoka kicks Marrok in the chest to make space, it still could be a shove, it’s clearly not a force push yet.
Ahsoka windmill attacks against the HK droid and then runs it through, but keeps it upright and uses it as a walking shield against Marrok.
Marrok finished off the HK unit and activates the other end of his two-ended saber. So now we have a double weapon, dual wield, and two weapon rules usually have something to say about double weapons, as things like the dual wielder feat for Ahsoka and the Inquisitor.
Ahsoka attacks Marrok from close in and behind, he windmills his saber to create space, and she evades it.
Marrok thrusts, and swings, and they bash swords a little, he acrobatically and she blocks his attack with cross sabers. Is she defending, dodging, or gaining a Defense bonus for being a Dual Wielder and having a light weapon in her off-hand? DW would also answer the draw both weapons as one action question.
Ahsoka shoves Marroks back to break the stalemate, then she force pushes him further. Marrok throws his windmilling saber blade at Ahsoka and jumps up on the transport ramp to escape. He catches his returning saber. Ordinarily, you’d never be able to throw something like that, that far or hope to get it back, but we see Inquisitors do it all the time in Rebels. I’m not sure how much anti-gravity or telekinesis might be involved.
Marrok might have the Tumbling minor feat as he smoothly moves around Ahsoka and is unhindered, that’s not normal Jedi, Sith, or Fencing footwork.
So I’m looking at Star Wars Saga, their Force Slam is a 15ft cone, and both damages the target and knocks them prone but does not knock them back? Their Force Thrust is all about movement and less about damage, it’s essentially a ranged shove.
